Letters

Hello!

Hi, I’m Sammie and I invite you to get to know me better. As you read these words written on my heart, please allow yours to be opened to accepting them.

You may be wondering why I’m choosing to adopt. Simply put, I have a lot of love to share. I realize that an adoption is not one sided; a child will add to my life by returning more than I can ever give. I desire to be a mother because this is the purest love that I can give and receive. I look forward to opportunities to learn, grow, share joy and...

This Is Me

I started my life with very humble beginnings. I was born in Guyana. My parents migrated to Brooklyn, New York with six children when I was 10 years old. This move caused a sudden clash of culture, weather, accents and everything that I knew as normal to come to a head. I was removed from a familiar Caribbean culture full of sunny days and the warm love of extended family. However, soon Brooklyn became part of me. I loved its eclectic energy, mix of cultures, and it’s artsy yet no nonsense vibe. Here my two worlds merged, making me who I am today....

My Home & Neighborhood

As a child raised in Brooklyn, living in an apartment was all I knew. In fact, my plan was to move to Manhattan and live in a skyrise building with a door man.

When I decided to advance my nursing career, only one school accepted all of my credits. Unfortunately (or so I thought then) it was upstate NY. I mean, did life exist outside of the five boroughs? My plan was to finish school and return to the city. Instead, I decided to stay and complete my doctorate.

After...

And Here Lies My Heart: Meet the Family

Coming from an immigrant Caribbean family, it’s not unusual to have a large community of extended family. Growing up, it was like a family reunion every other weekend. My aunts and uncles were like second moms and dads because they were very hands on in helping each other raise their children. My cousins are more like sister-cousins; we grew up as siblings and friends. I’m grateful to be a part of such a loving, compassionate, kind and sharing family. I’d like to say more but it would make us seem perfect, and we’re not; we’re...

My Mother's Impact

My mom was my first best friend. I looked up to her as a child and even more so now. As a single mom she often worked two jobs, even when she went back to school to be a nurse. I still don’t know how she did it.

One experience with her molded me forever: My mom bought fabric to reupholster our torn living room furniture. She was in school and received a letter in the mail about a life-changing exam she recently took. I watched her open the letter with excitement; I asked what did it say? Did you pass? I...

Friendship Files Unlocked

As I’ve grown and gotten to know myself I stopped looking for friends that spoke, dressed, or looked like me. Instead I committed myself to looking for people that were kind, loving, supportive in word and deed, and ones that built me up. I’ve looked for friends that were true, with my eyes closed and my heart open. I’m grateful I found them; they are my sunlight, radiating beauty and positivity.

My core friend-family has been there through my happy times but more importantly, through the tough...

Childhood Memories Turned Hobbies

I like to do things that are relaxing and/or active. My hobbies include furniture refurbishing, house painting, trying new recipes, and now TikTok; it’s addicting!

Picture this: a cold Saturday morning, a young girl and her uncle setting out to assemble a bookcase. We spent all morning putting it together. I didn’t even notice the time flying by; I was so excited. When it was finished, I felt a sense of accomplishment. It was my first project but certainly not my last. Soon this moved on to painting...

My Activities

I enjoy staying active. Keeping busy helps me stay physically and mentally healthy. My favorite activities range from hiking, biking, traveling, laying beachside, yard work (raking, shoveling snow), and yes—applying makeup. The latter requires just as much work, patience, persistence, and precision as everything else. (Well, I thought if I described it that way, it would make for a strong stand as to why this is under activities.)

Hiking and biking exposes me to...

Values & Discipline

I’m a Christian and will raise a child with Christian values such as: Love God first, love your neighbor, be kind, be respectful, show compassion, and share. I’d also like to instill values of self-love, self-worth, confidence, love of family/friends, hard work, education, and the importance of being themselves. I will be learning values from him/her also and I’m looking forward to embracing them.

As far as discipline, I believe communication plays an important role. I’ll use it to...

Thank You

Thank you so much for pausing to take a sneak peek into my life. My sincerest hope is that you were able to see me. Even though this is a brief introduction, I wanted to be as transparent as I could. I’m open to any questions you may have.

You’ve probably looked at many profiles and may wonder what makes mine special. Well, I think all hoping to adopt are special; it’s just finding the right special for you! My special includes Christian values, a large, loving and supportive family, friends...
